The world of natural skincare is filled with numerous ingredients and this can make it challenging to determine what is right for you.

From my experience with formulating skincare products, here is a list of ten ingredients that are incredibly beneficial for the skin.

1. Aloe vera

INCI: Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract or Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice.

Origin: Aloe vera is a plant native to Africa. It is cultivated extensively worldwide and grows wild in the tropics.

Characteristics: Aloe vera is a humectant, which is key to improving skin hydration. A versatile product due to its beneficial properties, able to be applied topically and in cosmetics. Serves as a wound healer and is great to address inflammatory skin.

Benefits and uses:

  • Soothes skin.

  • Suitable for all skin types.

  • Aloe vera is useful for almost any skin condition that requires soothing and astringent properties.

  • Particularly helps to address acne and sensitive skin problems.

  • Helps to relieve and speed up the rate of wound healing and reduce the risk of infection due to its antibacterial and antifungal properties.

  • Hydrating properties.

  • Conditioning and softening skin.

 

2. Bentonite clay

INCI: Bentonite.

Origin: Bentonite clay is a common clay used in skin, hair, and oral care. Bentonite clay is formed by the devitrification or weathering of volcanic ash. It is an absorbent aluminium phyllosilicate clay.

Characteristics: Bentonite clay is an active ingredient, containing many minerals and having hydrating and absorbent properties. Bentonite has great water-holding capabilities.

Benefits and Use

  • Effective skin-cleansing properties.

  • Potential to address skin irritants such as contact dermatitis and skin rashes.

  • Effective as a face mask for its detoxifying properties.

  • Useful to revive dull and irritated skin.

 

3. Black seed oil

INCI: Nigella sativa.

Origins: Black seed oil is also known as black cumin seeds and black caraway, though it is not the same as cumin or caraway spice. Black seed oil comes from the Nigella sativa plant, which is easily cultivated and produced in the Middle East, west Asia, and other suitable climates.

Characteristics: Black seed is well-known by Muslims for its prophetic remedies. The seeds of Nigella Sativa plants contain over one hundred medicinal components. The oil is also good for internal consumption.

Benefits and Use

  • Black seed oil is high in linoleic essential fatty acid (Omega 6), which makes it absorb easily into the skin.

  • Suitable for all skin types.

  • possess anti-inflammatory properties and are able to address skin conditions such as acne, eczema, rashes, and psoriasis.

  • Aid wound healing.

  • A great moistouriser.

  • Black seeds are packed with over 100 nutrients.

4. Coconut oil

INCI: Cocos Nucifera Oil.

Origin: The origin of coconut oil is specifically unknown, but it grows in tropical environments. It is extracted from the coconut tree.

Characteristics: a saturated oil with a very long shelf life. Depending on location and climate, it is solid at room temperature. Coconut oil is high in lauric acid, which makes the oil unique in its composition. Lauric acid is an essential fatty acid that makes coconut oil saturated. It is well known for its antimicrobial properties and converts to monolaurin when consumed, which destroys internal harmful bacteria in the skin. It’s an excellent oil for consumption and cooking.

Benefits and Use

  • A moisturising oil that is particularly beneficial to dry skin types.

  • Wound-healing effect agent

  • Effective in making deodorant due to its high composition of lauric acid, which is antibacterial.

  • Excellent penetration properties for the skin and hair strands.

  • Effectiveness as a hair conditioner product: all of this is due to the properties of lauric acid.

5. Jojoba oil

INCI: Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil

Origins: The oil is native to semi-desert regions of Southern California, Arizona, and north-west Mexico.

Characteristics: Jojoba oil is not technically an oil, but rather a wax that is liquid at room temperature and solidifies in cold weather. Additionally, due to its tocopherol content, it boasts a considerable shelf life. Jojoba oil absorbs easily and doesn't leave a greasy feeling on the skin.

Benefits and Use

  • Its sebum-like composition helps repair the skin barrier. This makes it suitable as a conditioning agent for all skin types.

  • Particularly useful for dry and mature skin, as well as those prone to acne.

  • Jojoba oil also has skin-regenerating and toning properties.

  • Capable of maintaining the skin's acid mantle, thus preventing trans-epidermal water loss.

  • May help with compromised skin conditions such as eczema and diaper rash.

6. Oats

INCI: Avena Sativa Kernel Extract or Colloidal Oatmeal.

Origins: Oatmeal has been around for centuries and has long been praised for its treatment of dermatologic diseases, and its use dates back to the times of Ancient Egypt and Arabia.

Characteristics: Colloidal oatmeal is an active botanical. It is very different from grinding oats at home (I’ve done this to observe the difference). Grounded oats are not the same as colloidal oatmeal. Colloidal oatmeal is an ultra-fine powder. in its recognition as a soothing and protective agent for itchy, dry, and inflamed skin.

Benefits and Use

  • Has excellent soothing properties and an anti-irritant effect.

  • Commonly used to address inflammatory and itchy skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis.

  • repairs and maintains the skin's epidermal barrier.

  • Possess cleansing properties.

  • A versatile active with anti-fungal and prebiotic properties.

7. Olive oil

INCI: Olea Europaea Fruit Oil.

Origins: The olive tree dates back several years and was popular in Ancient Egypt. It is also historical in the Middle East, and it is cultivated in warmer climates.

Characteristics: a stable oil obtained from the flesh of the olive fruit. Has a slightly green colour. The oil is rich and serves as a penetration enhancer in skincare products.

Benefits and Use

  • Potential to help with sun-damaged skin.

  • High in oleic acid, which supports the skin's sebum production.

  • Potential to soothe irritated skin due to its high antioxidant properties.

  • A source of plant-based squalene, which functions as a natural emollient and protective agent.

  • Always use extra-virgin for best results.

8. Rosehip oil

INCI: Rosa Rubiginosa Seed Oil

Origins: Rosehip plants originate from Asia, but they are mostly produced in Chile due to the suitable climate for the plant.

Characteristics: The oil is reddish-orange due to the carotenoids content. The oil is high in two essential fatty acids, linoleic and alpha-linoleic acid, which makes it a unique oil composition.

Benefits and Use

  • Regenerative and nourishing skin properties.

  • Absorbs quickly into the skin, leaving no greasy feeling.

  • Potential for uneven skin pigmentation, dark spots, wrinkles, and UV skin damage.

  • Contain high Vitamin A content, promoting collagen formation.

  • Soften skin texture.

9. Shea butter

INCI: Butyrospermum Parkii Butter.

Origin: Its origin is traced to African countries; it grows in most West African countries, in the dry parts of the regions.

Characteristics: Shea butter is a natural butter extracted from the nut of the African shea tree.

Benefits and Use

  • Displays a protective role against UV rays due to the cinnamic acid and latex content.

  • Helps relieve muscle and joint pain.

  • It has anti-inflammatory properties and helps with irritated skin. conditions such as eczema, rashes, etc.

  • Has high anti-oxidant properties.

10. Sunflower oil

INCI: Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil.

Origins: The sunflower originates from South America. The plant is able to grow in almost any soil where there is plenty of full sun and water in the growth area.

Characteristics: The oil is extracted from sunflower seeds. Light-yellow colour, which makes it well tolerated in other skin care products.

Benefits and Use

  • Skin softening and conditioning properties

  • Sunflower oil is light-based and great for body massage.
