Wondering how to keep you keep your skin hydrated and moisturised at the same time? Harmattan and winter season is fast approaching, it can be hard for your skin to stay hydrated. Here are 5 tips to help you keep your skin hydrated as the harsh weather approaches.
Hydration is the process of making your body absorb water or other liquid (Cambridge Dictionary) Hydration is vital to preserve your skin’s elasticity and healthy looks. Your skin is the largest organ in your body, composed of cells that hold around 70% of water content. Inadequate hydration affects the skin’s protective barrier leading to transepidermal water loss (TEWL), leaving us with dry, dull-looking skin. It is no surprise that hydration is critical for optimal skin health.
In skincare hydrating your skin takes two forms
Intrinsic hydration – affected by diet and water intake.
Extrinsic hydration – based on skincare ingredients, and environmental factors.
5 Benefits of skin hydration.
Enhances skin appearance.
Improves skin elasticity.

Helps with oil production/regulation and balancing out.
5 Ways to keep your Skin Hydrated
1. Incorporate Water into your Diet.
Incorporate Water into your Diet. It might seem cliché or irrelevant to you, but drinking plenty of water is highly important for your skin health. Instead of reaching for juice, tea, or coffee (Coffee is a diuretic), make sure to focus on drinking H2O to keep your body hydrated. Consuming adequate amounts of water is of paramount importance for replenishing and repairing your skin’s moisture barrier. I've seen people struggle with meeting their daily water intake; so it can be hard to get into the habit of drinking. My recommendation, try adding slices of cucumber or lemon to your water, if you’re not used to bland taste. I've also seen how intake of water has helped a client to address dehydration with an acne-prone skin. So, yes drink water and drink good quality water as well.
2. Avoid taking long shower baths.
Avoid taking long shower baths. Limit the time spent in the shower and using cool or lukewarm water instead of hot. . Exposing your skin to too much hot water can cause your natural oils to evaporate, resulting in dry skin.
3. Environmental control.
Environmental control. During cold weather make sure you wear good clothing that covers your skin to prevent dryness. Conversely, in hot weathers, be careful of air conditioners as it reduces humidity in your environment which compromise your skin natural moisture barrier, thus compromising the moisture barrier of your skin and leading to dehydration.
4. Apply skincare products on a damp skin to lock in moisture.
Apply skincare products on a damp skin to lock in moisture. Hydration and moisturisation are intertwined. Hydration requires adding water to your skin while a moisturiser in lay man’s term serves to lock the water in your skin. A good moisturiser helps to maintain skin hydration because it locks the water moisture in your skin thus preventing transepidermal water loss.
5. Utilise water-based Humectant.
Utilise water-based Humectant. Certain products, such as aloe-vera, honey and glycerine are super hydrating-ingredients and they work by attracting moisture from the environment to your skin. However, during dry weather, humectants have to be used with caution as there may not be enough moisture in the environment for the humectant to work optimally. With this in mind, it is essential to stay on top of hydration to ensure the best results.
