3 things that could happen when you change your skincare products
You want a gorgeous skin and decide to start using a new skincare product and then something undesirable happens. You find out you’re breaking out than normal. Something seems to be going wrong. The product doesn’t seem to be working. What is going on you wonder?
As the season is changing, I decided to formulate some skincare product and few days into using the products my skin began to purgeeeeee.
There are a number of things that could happen when you change your skincare products. It’s crucial to know the ingredients you apply on your skin and consider the lifestyle factors you’re currently living to take your skin towards a healthy state.
When you start using a new skincare product you have to be patience while waiting for results. Don’t be hasty in the process.
Here are 3 things that could happen when you change your skincare product.
1. Purging
Skin purging can occur when you change your skincare product. It is a normal process of increased cell turnover. Skin purging is the process whereby your skin reacts to an active ingredient. It is common in acne-prone skin and combination skin. As someone with a combination skin, trust me, I’ve experienced skin purging a number of times. The first time I became observant of my skin purging was when I introduced rosehip oil to my skincare product. The purging properties of rosehip oil comes from a unique compound i.e., trans-retinoic acid which is a derivative of Vitamin A (you can comment below if you’d like to know more about this amazing oil). The process of skin purging is to accelerate the skin exfoliation process. Here the congested pores lurking in your skin is purged, pushed quickly to the surface.
Skin purging can look like breakouts; however, it disappears quickly than a normal pimple and the marks that result from it fades away quickly than hyperpigmentation marks. Skin purging can occur between four to six weeks of changing your skincare regimen and you have to be patient with it. Chemical exfoliants such as AHAs and BHAs accelerate skin purging.
Actives ingredients are the main cause of purging, and some oils have active properties. You’ll have to be patient and allow your new skincare product to work gently. Bring realism into your skincare expectation and be patient. Your skin challenge did not occur in one day, so don’t expect it all to go in one day or one week.
Caring for your purging skin
Be patient with your skin appearance.
Don’t pick the purge/acne that occurs. Let your skin perform its detoxing function.
Introduce actives slowly and gently into your skincare routine. Depending on the product start once a week to twice in a week.
Use the actives in the night.
2. Skin is breaking out.
The distinction between skin purging and skin breaking out is fine and not always clear cut. Breakouts could occur when the skincare product is unsuitable for your skin type which leads to an aggravated acne process. Breakouts can be accelerated by lifestyle factors such as stress, hormonal imbalance, stress etc. If you find the breakouts painful and taking longer to disappear then it is a breakout and not a purge. Purges tend to happen in places where you frequently have breakouts while an inflamed breakout could occur in a new area. If you do experience breakouts after using a new product you want to reconsider discontinuing the new product and assess its compatibility with your skin.
3. Allergic reaction
An allergic reaction is a sudden reaction to a skincare product. Here your skin is telling you it doesn’t like what you’ve just applied. People with sensitive skin can be prone to allergic reaction. An allergic reaction mainly occurs within 24 hours of application and your skin can react differently to this process. Your skin could react by swelling, itchy, rashy and in some instance a burning sensation. With an allergic reaction you want to discontinue using the product immediately, get it off from your skin and apply a basic moisturiser. I’ll recommend an oil-based moisturiser to ensure that the skin barrier are not compromised.
That will be all for this week. Have you experienced your skin’s response to any of the above? If yes, do tell in the comment section below.
