There are two main factors that accelerates the ageing process:

  • Intrinsic ageing or physiological /biological ageing

  • Extrinsic ageing or premature ageing. Ageing under this category are lifestyle induced premature ageing.

While intrinsic ageing is not under our control, we can take measures to prevent extrinsic ageing (premature ageing). By the end of this post, you will have a better understanding of tips and strategies to implement to age gracefully. Read on.

Tip 1: Moderate Your Sun Exposure.

Over-exposure to the sun can lead to skin complications. Sunlight is composed of three different types of radiation: UVC, UVB and UVA. Depending on your skin tone, over-exposure to the sun can accelerate ageing. People with darker skin tones have a higher level of melanocytes in their skin which provides some protection from the sun. While there are debates about avoiding the sun, sunshine is essential for optimal health. The key is to avoid sun-abuse by limiting your time in direct sunlight and protecting your skin by wearing clothing that covers your body. Dress modestly and cover your body to protect your skin. Vitamin D from the sun is essential for optimal health.

Tip 2: Keep your Diet under control.

Did you know that some foods contribute to premature aging? Processed foods lacking essential nutrients are considered "ageing foods." Processed foods lead to a process called glycation, which affects your elastin and collagen composition.  Advanced Glycation End-products (AGEs) are formed when processed foods are consumed or cooked at high temperatures. Refined sugar is a well-known culprit that causes inflammation in the skin and adversely affects the body's internal cells, tissues, and organ systems. Refined carbohydrates, such as white flour and bread, also increase the level of AGEs in the body. How food is prepared also plays a role in AGE levels, hence, It is crucial to prepare food correctly and consume foods with a high nutrient value.  Learn more about how to keep your skin hydrated.

Tip 3: Use the Right Skincare Product.

As you age, your skin undergoes natural changes that result in a thinner, drier, and more fragile skin. With this, the skin gradually reduces its regenerative abilities. Collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid are three essential components that are gradually reduced as we age. Although, this is a natural occurrence, the right skincare products can help to supplement these changes. The best time to start caring for your skin is now, ideally in your 20s, you establish a strong foundation for a healthy skin early on. Your skin tells a story, and the care you give it now will affect how it looks and feels in the future. Focus on products that provide hydration and moisturization to keep your skin plumped and smooth. However, be patient as you age, as your cell turnover slows down, and it takes longer for your skin to renew itself.

Tip 4: Environmental Factors

Environmental pollution has poor health and skin outcomes. Prolonged exposure to pollution accelerates inflammatory skin conditions and premature ageing. Exposure to pollution can increase sebum secretion and depletion of antioxidants such as Vitamin E, an essential antioxidant that neutralizes and stabilizes free radicals in the body. Too much free radicals in the body can create oxidative stress, which is harmful to your skin's health.

Tip 5: Beauty Sleep

Never underestimate the power of a good night's sleep. Getting quality sleep is vital for a healthy skin. Without proper sleep, your skin is under more stress, leading to inflammation, hormone disruption, and other issues. Sleep helps your skin repair and regenerates which results in youthful-looking skin appearance. Adequate sleep also impacts your skin's moisture and hydration levels which are essential for your skin’s barrier repair function. If you're not getting enough sleep, you may notice saggy eye bags, dull, patchy skin, and other signs of stress. Therefore, get enough sleep and take rest as our skin is a reflection of our inner health. A good night sleep gives your skin the time it needs to heal and regenerate.

In conclusion, aging gracefully is a beautiful thing, and taking care of your skin is crucial in achieving it. Avoiding overexposure to the sun, dress modestly when you are in it. Eat whole, nutrient-dense foods. prioritize using the right skincare products, pay attention to environmental factors, and prioritize good sleep. Aging can be beautiful, and with the right mindset and skincare routine, you can age gracefully. Your skin's vitality is a reflection of the love and care you give it. Cheers to aging gracefully and confidently, one day at a time!
