Taking care of your skin is vital, but what if your skincare routine is not delivering the desired results despite your best efforts? It can be frustrating, but the good news is that with a few tweaks, you can get your skincare routine back on track. If your skincare routine isn't effectively taking care of your skin, then it's time to re-evaluate and identify the reasons why.
Skincare products and routines are personalized, and its effectiveness depends on various factors such as location, weather, and skin conditions. However, if you feel that your skincare products and routine are not working for you, it's likely because it's not the right fit for your specific needs.
In this article, we'll explore 5 common reasons why your skincare routine may not be working as expected. Keep reading to uncover five common reasons your skincare regimen might be falling short.
5 common reasons why your skincare routine might be falling short
1. Bad Habits Sabotaging Your Skin
Bad Habits Sabotaging Your Skin. You may be using the best products but with bad practices that sabotages the result. Some habits are done consciously and unconsciously. Do you tend to pick at pimples/blemishes, touch your face throughout the day? Skip on moisturiser because you have an oily skin. Using hot water to cleanse your skin? etc. Be conscious and identify bad habits you’re engaged in sabotaging your skin. These bad habits can wreak havoc on your skin. Picking at your skin can lead to scarring and infections, while constant touching transfers dirt and oils, leading to breakouts. Skipping on a moisturiser may compromise your skin’s natural barrier. Using not water may also compromise your skin’s barrier and lead to dehydrated skin.
Solution: Be mindful of your habits and break free from these sabotaging actions.
2. Weather Changes
Weather Changes. Your skin's needs change with the seasons. Harsh winter/harmattan winds and scorching summer sun can strip your skin of moisture, leaving it dry and sensitive. Using the same products year-round may not provide the necessary protection. Speaking from experience, I’ve seen my skin transfer from oily-oily to dry with weather change. Care for your skin based on the weather. During cold weather you want to double your moisture and hydration. Oil-rich products are super important in the cold weather to lock in the moisture for a long time. During hot weather, you want to use light-based product and humectants as there is moisture in the air. This also applies for hair care, no matter your hair type in a cold weather, your hair may thrive on heavy butters than light oils.
Solution: Adjust your skincare routine to accommodate seasonal changes.
3. Impatience to See Results
Impatience to See Results. In our fast-paced world, we often expect instant gratification. But skincare is a long-term commitment and overnight results are almost impossible and unrealistic. It takes time for skincare products to deliver effects. Consistency, commitment, and patience are essential to achieving great skin health. The skin challenge did not just occur, so don’t expect it to go away just like that. It can take up to 28 days to see result with skincare and as you age it gets longer.
Solution: Be patient and consistent with your skincare routine. Give products at least six to eight weeks to show results before considering a change.
4. Using the Wrong Products
One common mistake in skincare is using products that aren't right for your skin type. This can cause irritation and make existing skin issues worse. Choosing the right skincare products for your skin can be overwhelming, and it's easy to get caught up in the latest trends. However, some skincare products may not be suitable for your skin type, and using them can lead to adverse reactions, breakouts, and other skin issues. It's crucial to read the product labels and research ingredients before purchasing any skincare products. This is where knowing your skin type is super important.
You can’t have an oily skin and be splattering coconut or avocado oil on your face, it will make your face super oily as the oils are heavy and more suited for dry skin. Another way to use the right product is to read ingredient labels. Some people are allergic to some products so if they use a product with the allergic ingredient it won’t work effectively and you may have a reaction. For example, people who are allergic to nuts may want to avoid strong nutty oils such as Almond, Macadamia and Argan. Get to know your skin and identify what is suitable for it and you’re a step ahead to achieving your best skin with the right knowledge!

Solution: Identify your skin type and concerns, and choose products tailored to your specific needs. If you're unsure, seek a skincare professional for personalized advice.
5. Lack of Consistency and Expecting Perfection
Skipping your skincare routine or using products sporadically can hinder progress. It is also important to have realistic expectations and not strive for unrealistic perfection. Everyone's skin has imperfections, and striving for unrealistic perfection can lead to frustration and disappointment. Perfection in skincare is so unrealistic. Expecting that flawless skin is attainable but be realistic with the time you set and the ingredients you’re using. Skincare takes time and effort, and you need to invest in good products. Set realistic goals and be patient with the process. So, set realistic expectations and don’t beet yourself up. We have a couple of reminders on this highlight. Don’t chase after a temporary appearance, work on your character.
This Naseeha (Advice) is to myself first before anyone else. We all need reminders. As a Muslim, I emphasise on this point because lately I have people asking me how to achieve a flawless skin. And I’m not saying these are unattainable, but speaking from my life-coaching experience, skincare is deeply rooted in insecurities. Learning about life-coaching before skincare has helped to keep me grounded – Alhamdulillah. So, yes, use good skincare products, but please work more on you as a person, because your character is more important than any physical appearance. The people you’re close to most are interested and engage with you on your character than your appearance. So, please sissy work on that may Allah aid you.
