"Your skin is so important; I can't stress enough how crucial it is to your health and happiness." These wise words from Dija Ayodele in her book, "Black Skin β The Definitive Skincare Guide," remind us of the significance of understanding our skin. Our skin type isn't just a beauty classification; it's a key to a healthier, happier you.
In the early 20th century, Helena Rubinstein pioneered the concept of skin typing, making it easier for us to select the right skincare products. There are various systems for skin typing, but today, we'll focus on the common method that can simplify your skincare journey.
Why Your Skin Type Matters
When it comes to skincare, knowing your skin type is like having a secret code. It's the first step to making sure you're using the right products and maintaining a happy, healthy complexion. It's not just about beauty; it's about saving time and money by avoiding skincare mishaps.
But how do you figure out your skin type? Well, it's not always as straightforward as it seems. Your skin can be a mix of two types, with one dominating the other. It's not static, either; it changes with age, diet, and various external factors. As Star Khechara says in "The Holistic Beauty Book," "Your current skin type is a snapshot of what state the skin is at that present moment."
It's essential to distinguish between skin type and skin condition. Skin type is your baseline, while skin condition can change depending on various factors.
A Simple Test to Know Your Skin Type
To determine your skin type, the face is the best canvas to start with. It's the most visible and often requires the most care. However, your skin isn't confined to a single category; you may have different types on different parts of your body.
Generally, there are five main skin types:
1. Dry Skin: Thirsty for Hydration
Dry skin craves moisture. It often feels tight, flaky, and can be sensitive. When your skin doesn't produce enough natural oils, it feels tight and lacks moisture. You might also have dehydrated skin that can't retain enough moisture in the top layer. Environmental factors can contribute to dry skin, such as using harsh detergents.
The Right Care
Stay hydrated from the inside out.
Use water-based skincare products, and moisturize immediately after a shower.
Avoid hot showers and be mindful of clay masks.
NOTE: dry skin is easily susceptible to premature ageing and with good hydration and the right skincare products youβll be a step forward to address this!
2. Normal Skin: The Unicorn of Skin Types
This is the ideal skin type, characterized by smooth, even-toned, and usually blemish-free skin. It tolerates most skincare products and can be maintained with a balanced diet and regular skincare.
However, it is challenging to achieve due to a number of internal and external factors such as hormonal imbalance, environmental factors and in some instance genetics.
You may be wondering why this is so. Think back to when you were a small child, you probably had a radiant balanced skin, at this age you may not even care for your skin as much as you do right now, but as you age and begin to grow through your puberty age a myriad of changes happens.
Whilst it is ideal to aim for a normal skin type, it is not an indication of healthy skin. Just like having a slim figure does not automatically mean youβre healthy. Oh! donβt get me wrong in not aiming for a normal skin but aim for a healthy skin and you will see your skin flourish with the right care.

The Right Care
What more advice can I give than to tell you to keep up with what you do: maintain your routines.
As you age, your skin may move towards the dry type spectrum.
Keep hydrated.
Watch your diet as well.
3. Oily Skin: Shine Bright, But Not Too Bright
If your skin tends to be shiny, especially in the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin), and you're no stranger to the occasional pimple, you likely have oily skin. The good news is that oily skin is less prone to wrinkles. Opt for lightweight, oil-free products to keep that shine in check.
Oily skin can be challenging to manage as it often feels greasy and prone to acne, blackheads, and whiteheads. Skipping moisturizer is a common misconception, but it leads to more oil production, creating a vicious cycle.
One beauty of oily skin is that you are less prone to premature ageing.
An oily skin is prone to certain skin conditions such as acne, blemish, whiteheads, blackheads and hyperpigmentation.
The Right Care
Use a gentle cleanser.
Avoid harsh products.
Moisturise with lightweight options. Moisturiser is key to replenish moisture in your skin. Opt for lightweight moisturiser. Avoid drying out your skin by neglecting to use a moisturiser, this can lead to a vicious cycle causing more harm.
Avoid picking at your skin and popping your pimples (if you have) this leads to the spread of inflammation and could potentially cause scarring on the face.
Exfoliate with care.
Clay mask can be used regularly. Depending on your oily skin spectrum, not more than twice in a week. If using an exfoliant, then once a week.
Manage your lifestyle and diet. Drink water. Get enough rest. Manage your stress levels by not overthinking, to regulate your hormones.
4. Combination Skin: The Balanced Act
Combination skin is like a combination platter β a bit of everything. Your T-zone might be oily, while your cheeks feel dry. Balancing this skin type can be a bit tricky, but a targeted approach using multiple ingredients can help you maintain harmony. It can be a struggle to manage combination skin with finding the right products and care. Balance is the key as you require products that offer a balance and moisture to the skin.
Combination skin type benefits from combining more than one product.
The Right Care:
Balance is key. Consider using different products for different areas, and adapt your routine based on the dominant skin type.
Clays mask should be used minimally. Once a week is ideal.
5. Sensitive Skin: Handle with Care
Sensitive skin requires tender loving care. It's prone to redness, irritation, and allergies. Choose fragrance-free, hypoallergenic products, and always patch-test new products to prevent potential flare-ups.
Sensitive skin can range from mild discomfort to severe reactions, including excessively dry skin, redness, itching, and tingling. Underlying skin conditions like eczema and rosacea often contribute to sensitivity.
The Right Care
Sensitive skin deserves extra care and effort. Whatever routine or product you use, youβll have to be very patient. Be patient and gentle with your skin.
Opt for fragrance-free products, Keep your skin moisturised. Oils are great!
Avoid long shower baths without hot water.
Consider soothing treatments like oats baths or herbal cold compress.
Treat your skin like a babyβs skin.
Understanding your skin type is the first step in creating a tailored skincare routine that brings out your natural radiance. Remember, your skin's needs may change with the seasons and over time, so stay in tune with what it's telling you.
Your skin type is the compass that guides you on your skincare journey. Knowing it allows you to make informed choices, select the right products, and maintain a healthy, radiant complexion. So, embrace your unique skin type and give it the care it deserves for a happier and healthier you! ππ
